FORKS, Wash. – Naval Base Kitsap Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Outdoor Recreation Department chauffeured Sailors to the Olympic Coast for a day filled with outdoor fun, Feb. 6.
The trip focused on the Hoh Rainforest and Kalaloch Beach, but also involved a few scenic stops along the way to give everyone a chance to take photos and stretch their legs.
“I signed up for different trips for the next few weekends since I was tired of doing nothing in my barracks room,” said Master-at-Arms Seaman Brandon Robinson, stationed with Marine Corps Security Force Battalion-Bangor, from Fallon, Nevada. “This definitely beats anything I would have normally done and it feels good to get outside for a while.”
Often, an issue for Sailors is the lack of a vehicle that will get them to the far flung reaches of the state. With that in mind, MWR offers transportation to the location to give everyone the chance to see the amazing things Washington has to offer.
“Right now I’m attached to the [Transient Personal Unit, Puget Sound] waiting to meet [USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74)] on deployment, so I really wanted to see the area as much as possible before going away for a few months,” said Machinist's Mate Fireman Phillip Mendez, from Albuquerque, New Mexico. “I wouldn’t have been able to see these places on my own since I don’t have a car.”
The guides that lead the trips are experienced and are often exploring on their own time, looking for the next place to bring Sailors.
“I have been a guide for groups all over the country and it’s always a great experience,” said Kellyn Holt, MWR recreation assistant, from Bremerton, Washington. “The Pacific Northwest offers a ton of different things to do outdoors from kayaking to mountaineering, it’s hard not to fall in love with the area if you like to be outside.”
MWR's Outdoor Recreation Department is always planning different trips to get Sailors outside and on their next great adventure in the Pacific Northwest.
