HONOLULU – During the 2016 NFL Pro Bowl, 8th Theater Sustainment Command Soldiers volunteered their time to assist the Aloha Stadium staff with pregame preparations here Jan. 31.

More than 200 volunteers with the military worked together, for five-days, to guarantee a flawless event for spectators and players alike. There were more than 13 moving pieces for the pregame show alone.

Sgt. 1st Class Iziah Carthens,an 8th TSC operations noncommissioned officer, said the volunteers spent extra time practicing the quick stage set up to be better prepared for game day.

“We did a bunch of practices late at night,” said Carthens. “All the big [stage] pieces that were coming through the tunnel, we all had to push them out coordinating together. The military really pulled together.”

Aside from the military’s involvement in the pregame performance, hundreds of military volunteers also worked together behind the scenes to move the pregame show logistics on and off the field in days leading up to the game.”

Once the game was over, the players took the time to thank the service members for all they do.

“Thank you so much for everything you all do,” said Derek Carr, the Oakland Raiders quarterback. “You are all the true heroes. Everyone watches football and looks up to us but you guys are the true heroes and we know it. So, thank you so much and God bless.”

Even a head coach and NFL Football Hall of Famer took time to give his thanks and support of the troops.

“I am Michael ‘The Playmaker’ Irvin, a three-time Super Bowl champion with the Dallas Cowboys and I am an NFL Hall of Famer but I tell you this, there are no greater Hall of Famers than the troops,” said Michael Irvin, an NFL sports anchor and retired Dallas Cowboys wide receiver. “We appreciate all you do that allows us to live the life and do the things that we do. We get to play a game and have fun because you play the real game and keep us safe.”

For some it was an opportunity to meet people from different branches and serve the community. For others it was a once in a life time opportunity to meet some professional football players.
