‘Victory Medics’ prepare for ‘MEDSHOCK’

30th Medical Brigade

SEMBACH, Gemany – A “no-notice” alert put medical support leaders and Soldiers to the test as elements of the 30th Medical Brigade mobilized Jan. 23- 26 for “MEDSHOCK,” an exercise designed to test readiness capabilities and medical interoperability with Bundeswehr Airborne Role 1 and Bundeswehr Sanität (medical branch) Role 2 medical assets.

Personnel from the brigade’s 212th Combat Support Hospital and 421st Multifunctional Medical Battalion were alerted early Jan. 23 for an exercise scenario requiring that medical assets be deployed rapidly and life support sustained throughout the duration of the event. The exercise simulates a real-world scenario in which medical assets are needed in support of a general war effort.

Units are evaluating not only their own capabilities with “Role 1” (first aid, immediate lifesaving measures and triage) and “Role 2” (triage and resuscitation, treatment and holding of patients until they can be returned to duty or evacuated, and emergency dental treatment) facilities, but also their interoperability with Bundeswehr medical assets – including communications and evacuation capabilities.

After mobilization and assembly of medical facilities, units will conduct medical sustainment operations at McCully Barracks, Wackernheim Ranges and local training areas near Mainz for the rest of the week. Ongoing exercise events involve professionally “moulaged” patient role-players, realistic wartime injury scenarios, evacuation procedures and interoperable communications.
