ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. – The Outdoor Recreation Center hosted Dinner and a Bow for Airmen Jan. 22 to spark interest in the sport and encourage camaraderie among fellow Ellsworth AFB personnel.
The free event was coordinated by Michael Murray, 28th Force Support Squadron Outdoor Recreation Center range master, and had a turnout of 10 Airmen and civilians.
“Morale is a big thing to me,” said TJ Binder, 28th FSS recreation assistant. “You want your people to do better at work, you have to give them something to do. It gives them the motivation to get through the hard work later on.”
Attendees could enjoy free pizza and beverages while learning how to shoot recurve, long and compound bows at the indoor archery range on-base.
“I’m glad they did the event,” said Airman 1st Class Daquanne McDowell, 28th FSS commander support staff journeyman. “It’s definitely a morale booster and a good way for [someone] to learn archery, so I appreciated it.”
The recreation center also offers many services like trap and skeet, on-base fishing licenses and equipment rental for skiing and snowboarding.
Murray commented Airmen can look forward to new equipment, like an elevated shooting stand to simulate shooting from tree stands, to be featured in the ranges soon.
The center is open Monday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Tuesday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information on the services provided by Outdoor Rec, call (605) 385-2997.
