CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - The Provost Marshall Office’s Special Reaction Team hosted joint training event Operation Scare Tactics with Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point’s SRT and New Hanover County’s police department Oct. 20 at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

"The purpose of this training event was to get a different perspective on tactical operations," said Gunnery Sgt. Jessie C. Jelks, team commander of Camp Lejeune’s SRT. "The goal of Operation: Scare Tactics was to take the operators and put them in a tactical situation that they aren’t used to seeing."

The Halloween-themed event included Marines role playing as Zombies and various other individuals to help the teams train for what to do in a zombie apocalypse scenario.

"It was a Halloween-based training event that depicted a post-apocalyptic scenario," said Jelks. "During the scenario, each unit got to see how they operate as individual teams."

The individual teams planned out their movement and routes prior to beginning the exercise.

They then maneuvered through the dark, trying to communicate in a noisy environment and use strategy to accomplish a mission in which every second counted.

"It took them out of their comfort zone and made each team realize what they need, and that’s quality training," said Jelks. "If you’re going to call any training quality, then you need to be able to highlight deficiencies."

Smoke covered the area as teams practiced moving from building to building covering ground as quickly as possible to get to their objective.

After completing the mission, teams debriefed and discussed what they did well and what they can improve moving forward.

"SWAT teams are like family, each one of them has their own dynamic, their own personality, their own set of unwritten rules, and those are the things that make them unique," said Jelks. "Those qualities are going to dictate how they operate and how they interact with each other."

This was a learning experience for all teams involved as they got the chance to see how other units worked with each other to accomplish a common goal.

Having both military and civilian teams there gave all teams insight on what they can do to perform and execute better.

"Being with civilian teams always brings knowledge and experience to the table," said Jelks. "Marine teams generally bring a lot of training and tactical experience that some civilian teams don’t have the options or the time to acquire."

The training event not only gave operators a chance to experience something new, but also gave them something to enjoy.

"One of the underlying goals of this event was fun; when people think of a SWAT team, they rarely think of people who have fun," said Jelks. "The love of the craft, the love of what we do as tactical officers, lends itself to a fun environment, both to when we are learning and to when we are challenged."
