FORT HOOD, Texas - The Defense Logistics Agency Energy, in coordination with the U.S. Army Office of Energy Initiatives and Fort Hood, will hold a groundbreaking event here at 10 a.m. Jan. 28 on West Fort Hood.
Katherine Hammack, assistant secretary of the Army (Installations, Energy and Environment), will speak at the event on behalf of the Army Office of Energy Initiatives and Fort Hood.
Once complete, this large-scale hybrid solar and wind renewable energy project will produce 65 megawatts of alternating current with a projected cost avoidance of at least $168 million in energy costs over the next few decades here.
This is the Army's first hybrid renewable energy project that includes both off- and on-post power generation. It is also the largest single renewable energy project to date. Once complete, the project will provide Fort Hood with an on-site solar system providing 15 megawatts AC and the remaining energy coming from a 50 megawatt off-site wind facility.
The Army is committed to partnering with industry and utilities on renewable energy projects that will strengthen energy security and sustainability at our installations and the surrounding communities.
This project brings the Army closer to the Defense Department's commitment to clean energy with the promise to deploy three gigawatts of renewable energy – including solar, wind, biomass and geothermal – on Army, Navy and Air Force installations by 2025.
Immediately following the event, a media availability with representatives from the primary organizations associated with this project will be held at the groundbreaking site.
In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held at the Montague Youth Center, Bldg. 70020, Clement Dr., Fort Hood.
