    126th Air Refueling Wing

SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. - The 375th Air Mobility Wing hosted the Crew Chief Advanced Troubleshooting Course from Nov. 30 through Dec. 17 at the Illinois Air National Guard facilities here. The course is designed to teach in-depth troubleshooting skills for all areas of crew chief responsibility including hydraulic systems, landing gear, fuel systems and flight controls.

In an effort to save money, the 375th AMW flew in an instructor to teach the course to six members assigned to the 375th and the National Guard’s 126th Air Refueling Wing. Oftentimes, courses are held at the schoolhouse at Shepherd Air Force Base which usually costs $6,000 to $8,000 per student depending on whether the student is able to stay on or off base. To put all six members through the course would have cost nearly $50,000; however, by flying in an instructor the wing was able to save over $30,000 in unnecessary travel expenses.

Bringing in an instructor to teach a course is not unusual but this is the first time the 375th has held a class for both Guardsmen and active duty members. Five of the six students are active duty members of the 906th Air Refueling Squadron, an active associate unit attached to the 126th.

The course was led by Staff Sgt. Cesar Valdez, an instructor from the 373rd Training Squadron Detachment, at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida.

After 117 hours of classroom instruction all six students received their certificates for the Crew Chief Advanced Troubleshooting Course. The classroom hours can also be applied towards completion of a Community College of the Air Force Associates degree in Aviation Maintenance Technology.

Unlike a typical college course where students receive a final exam, students in the advanced troubleshooting class are evaluated at the end of each section of the course. Students received their certificate upon satisfactory completion of each section of the course.
