MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - Ribbons, medals and awards are presented to military members as a distinctively designed mark of honor symbolizing valor, meritorious or exceptional service or accomplishment.
Sergeant Maj. James D. Vealey was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for outstanding meritorious service while serving as Sergeant Major of Combat Logistics Battalion 3, Combat Logistics Regiment 3, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force from May 2013 – July 2015 during a ceremony at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, Jan 8.
Vealey increased the combat readiness of CLB-3 by getting to the heart of the matter in every situation. His leadership led to transporters greatly improving their ability to employ weapons, communicate on the move and conduct proficient immediate actions and utilize Marine Air-Ground Task Force fire to protect convoys.
Over the course of his 26-year career in the Marine Corps, Vealey has learned to use his superior judgment and advisement skills to guide Marines and continue bettering himself as a leader.
“Vealey’s superior intelligence, experience and knowledge of the human spirit enabled insight rarely achieved,” said Sgt. Maj. Richard D. Thresher, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing sergeant major, as he read Vealey’s award. “Marines put forth more effort to take care of themselves because of his ability to lead his peers toward factors of motivation that prevailed in organizational and individual excellence.”
“Although I am honored to receive this award, I don’t like the spotlight on me,” explained Vealey, sergeant major of Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 2. “I would rather the recognition go to my Marines and Sailors because without them I would not be receiving this award.”
According to Vealey, receiving the Meritorious Service Medal is an honor and a privilege. It is a representation of the consistent hard work and dedication to duty he is committed to, as well as a motivation to keep moving forward and influencing his Marines.
