Story by Senior Airman Timothy Kirchner

    455th Air Expeditionary Wing

BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan - Not long ago, in a country far, far away, service members at Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan, were treated to what the rest of the world has been feasting on since last week: a chance to see “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”.

Ken Caldwell, Walt Disney Studios senior vice president of North American sales, brought the film to the base Dec. 22, much to the delight of service members at Bagram.

“These guys are the heroes, they’re the ones that really deserve something like this,” Caldwell said. “It’s just such a pleasure to be able to see their expressions and feel their gratitude for something like this happening. It’s great.”

The ‘star’-studded event was brought to Bagram by the Army & Air Force Exchange Service and Walt Disney Studios to give the service members a reprieve from their daily tasks.

“It’s just a great opportunity to be able to provide this for the soldiers,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Keith Craig, AAFES senior executive adviser. “I know how it feels to come out here, especially during the holidays and Christmas season.”

The movie was scheduled to play several times over the course of two days on base, allowing service members a chance to see the movie that’s taken box offices by storm back home.

“To bring something like this, it takes your mind off what’s going on, and then you can go back to work,” the sergeant major added. “I really understand how important this is to these troops and Airmen.”
