MORÒN AIR BASE, Spain - The Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. Robert B. Neller and Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Ronald L. Green visited U.S. Marines and sailors from Special-Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force Crisis Response-Africa aboard Morón Air Base, Spain, Dec. 20.
Neller’s visit to Spain is part of his initial tour around the Corps to meet Marines, hear what they have to say and provide guidance for the future.
“I care about all of you, and want you to be successful,” said Neller. “This is all about success, and my responsibility is to help you succeed.”
During his speech, Neller brought up issues ranging from security of our nation to professionalism as Marines. He also outlined five focus areas: people, readiness, training and experimentation, naval integration and modernization of technology.
“We are going to have to train a little bit differently; we have to raise the bar on the physical side, revisit the PFT, CFT, and height and weight requirements,” said Neller.
Neller is looking to adjust these standards by July 1, 2016, although he doesn’t know the specifics yet.
In his closing, he asked for a simple request: to take care of one another during the holidays and safely return to the U.S.
“Think about all the work you all have done up to this point in the Marine Corps, how your family is proud of you,” said Neller, addressing Marines about the perils of drinking.
“What I need from you is your thoughts, your advice and your commitment to one another.”
Neller became the 37th Commandant of the Marine Corps Sept. 24, 2015, relieving Gen. Joseph F. Dunford, Jr., who is now the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
