    1st Mission Support Command

FORT BUCHANAN, Puerto Rico – The 1st Mission Support Command (MSC) kicked off the holiday season with their annual tree lighting ceremony. Over 50 Soldiers and family members gathered in front of the 1st MSC building and waited for the night sky to fall. They enjoyed traditional Puerto Rican festivities which included music, singing and dancing.

“I know it has been a long day but I appreciate your being here today and helping us kick off this holiday season,” said Brig. Gen. Jose R. Burgos, 1st MSC commanding general. “I want to take this time to remind you that we are all family. The holiday season can be extremely hard for some of us so please do not hesitate to reach out to me or anyone else in this command if you need to.”

Burgos encouraged everyone present to enjoy the holiday season with their family and loved ones. He reminded them to always be aware of their surrounding even if they are doing the right thing. “We need you in our rank and we want to see all of you back here in January so please stay safe,” said Burgos.

The 1st MSC Family Programs Center Director, Elsa Cortes, has spent countless hours with her staff making sure everything was prepared for the event. “This is something that isn’t just for us, it is for our Soldiers and their family members,” said Cortes, “We want them to know that they are not alone and that they are in our prayers during the holidays.”

Cortes remembers volunteering for the tree lighting ceremony in 2005. Since she has become the director for family programs, she has planned and organized this event for four consecutive years. “I want to wish them all a wonderful Merry Christmas and holiday season, I want them to know that we are here for them.”
