OAK HARBOR, Wash. - Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) announced Naval Air Station Whidbey Island (NASWI) as the winner in the large category of the Navy’s 2016 Installation Excellence Award, Dec. 2.

The annual award recognizes the top three installations in the large and small category based on a package of 13 categories covering the pertinent fiscal year and following a prescribed format.

“I am proud of their collective accomplishments, outstanding leadership and world class support to the fleet, fighter, and family," said Vice Adm. Dixon Smith, CNIC.

NASWI felt privileged to receive such a prestigious award among all Navy bases.

“We are honored to be recognized as the Navy’s top installation award winner this year,” said Capt. Michael Nortier, commanding officer, NASWI. “The award recognizes the importance the Navy and Team Whidbey place in striving for excellence in supporting our active duty forces and their families.”

CNIC received many great packets from different commands around the world.

"Competition this year was extremely keen, as each large and small installation nomination package was impressive and spoke to the myriad of great accomplishments that these installation teams have made,” said Smith.

Nortier saw the award as a huge team victory and something he puts above everything else he’s achieved.

“This is by far the most exciting accomplishment I have been a part of,” said Nortier. “To be able to work day in and day out with talented and truly dedicated professionals is an honor in itself, but to see the team recognized for their continuing efforts is a priceless experience.”

The commanding officer gives the credit to the service members who make up NASWI and their dedication to the command.

“The Installation Excellence Award is the result of the Team Whidbey philosophy,” said Nortier. “The award recognizes the synergistic efforts of over 75 commands and 9,600 men and women that have always served Whidbey Island well.”

NASWI also won the Navy’s nomination for the Commander in Chief’s Annual Award for Installation Excellence, an award won previously in 2006.

President Ronald Reagan created the Commander in Chief’s Annual Award for Installation Excellence in 1985 to celebrate distinction in effort and operations on military installations throughout all branches of the armed forces.
