FORT BRAGG, N.C. - U.S. Soldiers and jumpmasters from allied nations worked together during an MC-4 and MC-6 parachute safety training here on Nov. 30, 2015.
Jumpmasters from Canada, Colombia, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Latvia and the Netherlands participated in the training.
The countries use different parachute systems but all have the same safety standards during an airborne operation.
“The procedures are pretty much standard across the board,” said Sgt. 1st Class Anthony E. Monaco, a Special Forces weapons sergeant. “The only differences could include the parachutes themselves and the aircrafts they jump out of.”
“The language is not too much of a barrier. We do things slowly to ensure safety,” added Monaco.
This is the first year the Colombian Special Operations Command has been to Fort Bragg in support of Operation Toy Drop, sponsored by U.S. Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command (Airborne).
“We are excited to get the latest updates and integrate all the safety factors between nations,” said Capt. Juan De Valdenebro, the senior jumpmaster for the Colombian Military Free Fall Team.
Training included familiarization with how to turn the parachute into the wind, avoiding hazards such as water, trees, and power lines and proper landing techniques.
“It’s for safety so there is no confusion up in the air,” Monaco said about the training.
“Both the foreign jumpmasters and the American jumpmasters are in sync so when they get ready to get on the aircraft they understand each other and give the jumpers a feel of confidence and safety,“ said Monaco.
In the past the Colombian soldiers have enjoyed working with the U.S. Special Forces during multinational exercises.
“It is important that they know and trust their allied forces,” said De Valdenebro. “We should be able to work together.”
