"Our veterans left everything they knew and loved and served with exemplary dedication and courage so we could all know a safer America and a more just world," said President Barack Obama in his annual Veterans Day Proclamation.

"They have been tested in ways the rest of us may never fully understand, and it is our duty to fulfill our sacred obligation to our veterans and their families. On Veterans Day, and every day, let us show them the extraordinary gratitude they so rightly deserve, and let us recommit to pledging our full support for them in all they do."

The City of Jacksonville, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune leaders and the Disabled American Veterans Onslow County Chapter 16 did their part to honor veterans during a Veterans Day Ceremony at the DAV building Nov. 11.

"Many of our veterans have served under the most demanding of circumstances and in the most dangerous corners of the earth. They have served with courage, distinction and self-sacrifice," said Pete Franco, commander of Disabled American Veterans Onslow County Chapter 16. "Today on Veterans Day, and every day, we need to remember their sacrifice. We should draw inspiration from their example and renew our commitments to those who have served."

Brig. Gen. Thomas Weidley, commanding general Marine Corps Installations East-Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and guest speaker for the ceremony, told multiple stories from Marines of World War II who visited Camp Lejeune earlier this year.

"The point of these stories is simple—the combat experiences of every veteran are unique, visceral and at times exceptionally painful, yet they deserve to be told. It is in the telling of these stories which ensures the lifeblood of our Corps is sustained and provides a burnished legacy which will be carried by the each generation," said Weidley.

The ceremony included a wreath placement to honor all veterans, the playing of taps and the playing of each branches hymn to honor all veterans present and past.

"To all of the veterans here and their families who have always sustained them, you have a nation’s gratitude not just on veterans day but on every day of the year. God bless you and semper fidelis," said Weidley.
