HUNTER ARMY AIRFIELD, Ga. – Charlie Brown themed decorations filled the consolidated dining facility on Hunter Army Airfield adding to an exceptional Thanksgiving meal served by senior leaders of the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division on Nov. 26.

The smell of turkey, ham and delicious sides filled the dining facility as Soldiers, Families and veterans filled their plates while looking at the ice sculptures and cake decorations that where created by the food service specialists.

The consolidated dining facility manager, Sgt. 1st Class Vanessa Doby, 3rd Squadron, 17th Calvary Regiment organized the Thanksgiving meal along with the decoration for the 3rd ID dining facility contest.

“We expect 400 people due to the single soldiers living in the barracks and retirees wanting to come in and get a nice thanksgiving meal like they use to have when they were in,” Doby said.

Some food service specialists traveled to South Carolina to take a class on ice sculpting while others spent nights carving pumpkins and creating a “Sweet Shop”.

Pfc. Eboni Whatley, 603rd Aviation Support Battalion received the go ahead for a creating a sweet tooth paradise for the meal.

“When I thought of the Sweet Shop I thought of Candy Land,” Whatley said. “Even though they are single Soldiers, we are all still family around here.”

The Sweet Shop was filled with eager children as well as commanders, first sergeants, warrant officers and the command team from 3rd CAB. The senior leaders also enjoyed a thanksgiving meal with Soldiers but not before they spent time as food servers.

Spc. Fernando Mendez, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment smiled at his plate full of the seasonal delights, but not before being surprised by who was scooping them onto his plate.

“I saw a lieutenant colonel serving me mashed potatoes, and I knew then that the seniors where here for us,” Mendez said. “It feels good to get that Thanksgiving meal because it was too expensive for me to see my family this weekend.”
