NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- Nellis and Creech Air Force Bases, the Nevada Test and Training Range, as well as the local community are working diligently to prepare for the annual Airman Cookie Drive.

The cookie drive is an annual tradition where sweet treats and confectionary creations are gifted to single Airmen living in the dorms of Nellis and Creech AFBs.

The annual event was implemented several years ago and is hosted at other bases around the Air Force. The drive is a way to bring Airmen the presence of family during the holidays, and is also a way to give back.

“I hope (the Airmen) will feel a little bit of home,” said Eva Culbreth, wife of 99th Civil Engineer Squadron superintendent Chief Master Sgt. Christopher Culbreth. “All of us, all of the volunteers throughout this area baking the cookies hope to give them a taste of home.”

Planning for the event began in October and the Cookie Drive Committee meets monthly leading up to the event. Besides planning the event, the committee also works with organizations and volunteers in the community that donate holiday cards and baked goods for the Airmen.

“My favorite thing about the cookie drive is looking at the cards the kids made,“ said Leslie Boutwell, wife of 99th Air Base Wing commander Col. Richard Boutwell.

“You know, the kids are so creative and they say the sweetest things and just seeing all that and knowing they are going to our Airmen, it really does make your heart smile to know that is going to be a part of their holiday season.”

For those wishing to donate cookies to the drive, there will be a drop-off point for their baked creations at the Nellis AFB Chapel on Dec. 14 from 6 to 9 a.m.

“We try to mound the plates with these beautiful, wonderful homemade cookies,” said Boutwell. “I hope personally (the Airmen) can experience that taste of home and know they are loved, appreciated and thought of. I hope that is what they can receive from this. Those warm feelings, the joy that comes with cookies, and a big ol’ glass of milk. So I hope it brings them some comfort, warmth and joy.”

Volunteers are needed to bake a variety of cookies as well as help pack and tie bags for delivery. For those donating cookies, it is important to remember to use disposable containers for donations. For those wishing to volunteer and for more information, contact nelliscookiedrive@gmail.com.
