Editor’s Note: This is the first in a four-part series of articles designed to generate awareness and provide helpful safety tips during the winter.

JOINT BASE MYER-HENDERSON HALL, Va. - The holiday season and its accompanying cold weather are here, so the U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center is urging service members and employees to stay safe with its annual autumn/winter safety campaign, “Ready… or Not?”

The initiative features a wealth of videos, articles and posters with information the Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall community can use to avoid the hazards brought by winter conditions.

“As the temperature drops and Soldiers, Army civilians and families take to the roads and the great outdoors for some well-deserved downtime, they’ll be exposed to risk more often than they might think,” the campaign’s website states. “It’s critically important to prepare them now for what lies ahead.”

The campaign, which launched in September 2014 and can be viewed at https://safety.army.mil, provides safety information in spring/summer and autumn/winter installments, promoting individual readiness with content detailing the seasonal risks.

The 2015-16 autumn/winter campaign provides materials on safe winter driving, avoiding cold weather injury, and staying safe at home or at the office.

Ron Foster of JBM-HH Safety said vehicle safety and winter driving are the joint base’s biggest focus, stressing that community members should be prepared for the winter months by winterizing their cars, inspecting their tires and checking that they have non-freezing windshield wiper fluid.

Adrain Kendrick, JBM-HH safety chief, said fire safety was another aspect community members need to be aware of.

“Fire is a big concern this time of year as well, because people are decorating trees, using electrical heaters, so make sure your smoke detectors are checked,” he said.

The campaign also includes information for avoiding harmful exposure to the elements by layering clothing and only using walkways that have been cleared properly.

Check back next week for the second article in this winter safety series, focusing on cold weather injury prevention.
