YOKOSUKA, Japan – Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 3’s (NMCB 3) Detail Yokosuka hosted a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) day for two Girl Scout troops at Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka (CFAY), Nov. 7.

The event was held to promote STEM for the Girl Scouts and strengthen the relationship between the Seabees and the local residents at CFAY. The Seabees partnered with the self-help Seabees stationed in Yokosuka, volunteering five hours of their off duty time to support the event.

The Girl Scouts were taught basic construction skills ranging from masonry to pipe fitting. They were also taught various methods of roofing, as well as electrical wiring, and other methods of construction. Each topic was taught by a Seabee subject matter expert, prior to letting the scouts perform a practical hands-on application.

Construction Electrician 3rd Class Hilary Butsch taught the electrical wiring station.

"It was an amazing experience,” said Butsch. “It makes me feel good to have been able to teach others about construction and to show what Seabees do."

After the construction events, the volunteers conducted a cookout for the Girl Scouts and their parents. The cookout gave the Girl Scouts the opportunity to ask the Seabees questions about construction and deployment.

NMCB 3 is homeported in Port Hueneme, Calif., and is currently deployed to Okinawa, Japan. The mission of NMCB 3 is to support Navy and joint forces throughout the U.S. Pacific Command (PACOM) area of responsibility (AOR) through construction projects and humanitarian missions in more than 14 different geographical locations.
