ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. - On Nov. 11, while the nation observed Veterans Day and celebrated the dedication of the men and women who have served United States Armed Services, the Radford Army Ammunition Plant, in Radford, Va., hosted 11 veterans from the Virginia Department of Veterans Services for a Wounded Warrior Hunt. This annual hunt is open to any Wounded Warrior who registers through the VVFS.

The event was hosted by Brig. Gen. William E. King IV, the commanding general of the 20th Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives (CBRNE) Command. King hunted alongside the Wounded Warriors and shared some encouraging words during a lunch held after the event.

“These men and women represent the best of what our country has to offer and are a significant part of our history and future. It was an honor to spend this time with them all here today,” King said.

Others echoed Brig. Gen. King’s comments, “It’s hard sometimes to realize the physical sacrifices they made,” said Len DiIoia, the Radford Army Ammunition Plant’s natural resource manager. “I had one guy say he’d never been treated like this before, never given these opportunities or shown this appreciation.”

The Wounded Warrior Hunt gives veterans who’ve made it home from multiple conflicts a chance to heal doing something they each enjoy and the chance to heal and to lend support to younger veterans. The Army staff and volunteers from Alliant Tech Systems and BAE Systems worked together to make the event possible.

The VVFS regional coordinators, Kristi Holt and Megan Davis also participated in the hunt. They expressed appreciation for the continued relationship between Radford and the VVFS and were thankful to have Army leadership on hand to participate and support.

“Most of these hunters had challenges immediately leaving active duty and this is one of those special events they look forward to each year. The sense of comradery is strong and this event really assists with our supportive and rehabilitative programs” said Holt.

The VVFS serves Southwest Virginia’s veterans and their Family members with access to behavioral health, rehabilitative, and supportive services. VVFS places special emphasis on assisting service members, veterans, and families on their road to recovery.

Radford Army Ammunition Plant manufactures propellant and energetics ingredients. Radford is part of the Joint Munitions Command. JMC provides bombs and bullets to America's fighting forces -- all services, all types of conventional ammo from bunker-buster bombs to rifle rounds. JMC manages plants that produce more than one billion rounds of ammunition annually, and the depots that store and demilitarize the nation's training and combat ammunition.
