BREMERTON, Wash. – More than 200 Sailors, family members and Department of Defense (DoD) civilians assigned to Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) took part in NBK’s free Winter Expo III at the Bremerton Fitness Complex, Nov. 18.

The three-hour expo featured vendors, activities, giveaways and special offers designed to provide NBK patrons with information and demonstrations about winter actives, sports and services provided by Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) and local vendors.

“We put together this event to bring a whole bunch of ski resorts, and the county parks and recreation areas, to come on base and showcase what they are doing for the winter,” said Kyle Better, a recreation specialist with NBK Bangor Outdoor Recreation Center. “Our goal is to get people out and motivated at all times of the year to do new things and to try new things.”

MWR is a network of support and leisure services ranging from services such as catering to fitness and entertainment, providing service members and eligible patrons with positive outlets for activities aimed at improving quality of life.

“I do a lot of snowboarding,” said Personnel Specialist 2nd Class David Young, of Longview, Texas, assigned to Navy Operational Support Center Kitsap. “MWR is a huge help in supplying everything you would need for the outdoors, and they pretty much have everything under the sun for winter sports.”

Young stated that after three seasons of snowboarding and winter travel in Washington, he discovered new locations and services as a result of attending the NBK Winter Expo and was thankful MWR offered the showcase.

“Since I haven’t been able to go to any mountains to ski or snowboard, I would like to try it for physical training,” said Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class David Phan, from Houston, assigned to Naval Hospital Bremerton. “I just want to check it out since I’ve never done it before.”

Unlike Young, Phan is a newcomer to NBK and winter sports, having reported to the area in July 2015. He expressed his eagerness to utilize MWR’s outdoor recreation services to plan his inaugural snowboarding experience.

“A lot of times when you get into the winter, people become dormant and that is when you can lose that good shape you gained while maybe hiking, running or playing sports in the summer,” said Better. “MWR events such as skiing, snowshoeing and rock climbing are meant to help maintain Sailors and keep them fit in the winter so they are not re-ramping up in the summer, but rather continuing with fitness in the winter.”

Whether a seasoned winter mountaineer or experiencing a Washington winter for the first time, Better emphasizes MWR’s role in supporting the physical readiness of NBK Sailors and their families.
