FORT STEWART, Ga. – The 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade dominated the Ultimate Frisbee competition during Marne Week at Fort Stewart November 16-17.
Three of the four top teams finishing the competition were from the 3rd CAB.

The 2nd Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment took home the title of champion after an incredible comeback victory in which they defeated 3rd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment 8-7 in the championship game.

Down 6-2 at halftime, no one expected the Knighthawks of 2nd Bn., 3rd Avn. Reg. to have any chance of winning. However, they showed no sign of quitting and held their opponent to only one score in the second half while they mounted what would be an epic comeback.

Team captain and executive officer for 2nd Bn., 3rd Avn. Reg., Maj. Mike Ishida, was deservedly excited after the amazing comeback victory.

“We’ve got NCO’s here, soldiers, warrant officers and officers together on this team,” Ishida said. “This is how we win, this kind of stuff right here, together as a team.”

Pfc. Justin Rosas, Company D., 2nd Bn., 3rd Avn. Reg., was excited to compete in his first Marne Week event.

“It was amazing, it definitely builds morale and I have a lot more respect for this place [Fort Stewart] I like it,” Rosas said.

Formerly 1st Bn., 3rd Avn. Reg., now newly reflagged 3rd Squadron, 17th Cav. Reg., had a team comprised of many players returning from last year’s Marne Week championship winning team. Expectations ran high as they came into the game undefeated. Losing is never easy, but the team handled it with class congratulating their aviation brigade brothers after the win.

Maj. Ryan Atkins, executive officer, 3rd Squadron, 17th Cav. Reg., shared his thoughts on both teams.

“It was a hard fought loss, but it was a great group effort by both teams,” Atkins said. “They have a very challenging team over there at 2nd Bn., 3rd Avn. Reg.”

Both Atkins and Ishida acknowledged they might have an upper hand since Ultimate Frisbee is very popular with the CAB.

“This is our sport, this is what we do as aviators,” Atkins said.

“If you ask any aviator about the career course for officers and warrant officers they will tell you that Ultimate Frisbee is our unofficial sport. Maybe it is a little unfair,” Ishida said.
