KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany – The 39th Transportation Battalion (Movement Control) hosted its semi-annual, weeklong “Transportation Academy” Nov. 9-12 educating more than 30 Soldiers and four leaders from 10th Polish Logistics Brigade on aspects of logistics ranging from customs clearance to pallet building.
In addition to the partnerships built in the Baltics through Atlantic Resolve, 39th Trans. continues to develop relationships with logistics counterparts in Germany, France, United Kingdom and now Poland.
Two lieutenants and two warrant officers of the Polish Land Forces attended the Transportation Academy, and added a unique element to the course by posing questions and providing insights from their culture and military experience.
“Today’s training provided instruction on a mode of transportation which we have had little experience in,” said 1st Lt. Ewelina Kasprzyk, with the 10th Polish Logistics Brigade said. “So it was a great opportunity to have hands-on experience with loading actual military vehicles on rail cars.”
A full afternoon of rail load training Nov. 12 provided instruction on an area of European transportation which largely goes unnoticed. Although a handful of Soldiers may have had rail training from prior experiences, this course explained the differences between European and U.S. rail loading procedures and required students to execute both systems when blocking and bracing vehicles.
Conducting regular rotations through Atlantic Resolve, 39th Trans. Soldiers frequently oversee rail movement of vehicles and equipment of maneuver units arriving in the Baltic ports.
“As my troops prepare to deploy to Atlantic Resolve North in less than two months, I was pleased to have the chance to prepare my Soldiers on rail operations, knowing they will be called upon to execute these skills to support the units arriving in the Baltic region,” said Capt. Kyle Chee, commander of 627th Transportation Detachment (MC).
The continued presence in the Baltic States and ever-growing partnership with NATO Allies, provides opportunity to demonstrate transportation interoperability with logistics counterparts from other nations, according to Chee. The 39th Trans. rail training and weeklong academy enhanced that partnership by developing skilled logisticians supporting the European theater, but also building one-on-one relationships with our Polish allies.
