Questions and Answers
Q: How long have you been doing your job?
A: I've been working in the S2 shop at the 30th Medical Brigade since July, 2014.
Q: What are your goals?
A: I would love to serve 20 years in the U.S. Army and retire as a command sergeant major.
Q: What are your hobbies?
A: I love to cook, travel (especially being in Europe), but most of all, I love spending time with my wife and family. I also read historical biographies and books on military history.
Q: What do you like most about the Army?
A: I enjoy the esprit de corps and camaraderie with other Soldiers, especially on exercises like Trident Juncture 2015 in Spain, which just completed. Each field exercise I learn how to adapt to the elements and learn tricks on how to be more comfortable in the field.
Q: What would you change about the military service life?
A: There are three things I would change about the military service life. One, the transition between military and civilian life should be easier for Soldiers. I've seen my Soldiers have a difficult time easing into a once familiar, but now foreign, lifestyle. Second, NCOES (noncommissioned officer education system), formerly known as PLDC (Primary Leadership Development Course), and the WLC (Warrior Leader Course), the first school in the NCO Education System, should have increased emphasis on improving writing skills. The new NCOER (noncommissioned officer evaluation report) has great emphasis in describing a Soldier's performance rather than brief bullet points. A NCO should be be able to covey their message in writing in order to set up their Soldiers for success. Last, I believe that there needs to be a great emphasis on teaching financial planning for all Soldiers.
Q: Describe your military career.
A: I enlisted in Miami in 2008, went to Basic Training in Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and graduated from AIT in Fort Sam Houston, Texas, in 2009 as a health care specialist. I deployed to Iraq in 2009-2010, to Afghanistan with the Security Force Advisory Team from 2012-2013, and since 2014 I have been with the 30th Medical Brigade.
Q: What do you like most about being stationed in Germany?
A: I love being able to travel in Europe and enjoy the food.
Q: What is your favorite movie genre?
A: I prefer western and mafia movies.
Q: What are you most proud of?
A: My family makes me proud.
Q: If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three things would you want with you (not survival gear, but things with personal meaning)?
A: I would make sure I had a family photo, my Crocs and my cigars.
Q: Name someone who has influenced or inspired you during your military career (could be a leader, mentor, peer or subordinate) and explain why.
A: Carlos Vasquez was my 1st squad leader coming into the U.S. Army. He guided me through the growing pains and showed me the ropes on how to be a better Soldier.
Q: If you could meet one individual, alive or dead, who would it be and why?
A: I would meet Thomas Jefferson and talk to him about the creation of the United States of America.
