FORT BLISS, Texas - Fort Bliss and 1st Armored Division hosted a Veterans Day ceremony recognizing the contributions of service members past and present Nov. 10 at Memorial Circle Parade Field, Fort Bliss, Texas.

“This is one of the most important ceremonies that we host on Fort Bliss all year,” said Maj. Gen. Stephen M. Twitty, commanding general. “Across this country and throughout the world, Americans pause on Veterans Day to honor our brave fighting men and women who, for more than 230 years, have fought for freedom through their duty, honor and selfless service.”

The ceremony, honoring all service members including the over 100 Iron Soldiers currently serving overseas, featured remarks by both Twitty and Col. Earl B. Higgins Jr., commander, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 1AD, in addition to performances by the division band.

“I think it is a wonderful thing when we are able to pay homage to our veterans and pay them the honor and respect they are afforded for their sacrifices for our country,” Higgins said.

In addition to veterans, Higgins extended his gratitude and recognized the family members of fallen comrades who have made significant sacrifices of their own.

“For all of the veterans we have here today, particularly the Gold Star families that have given so much to this country and continue to give by their presence today, thank you,” Higgins said.

Taps sounded as attendees embraced a moment of silence, remembering the veterans who’ve come before and made the ultimate sacrifice.

Veterans Day recognizes each veteran who has given a part of themselves to this country and taking the time to honor those who gave their lives in the line of duty, Twitty said.

“Today, we honor the long line of veterans that came before us and paved the way,” Twitty said.
