Story by Lt. Col. Matthew Devivo

    North Carolina National Guard

RALEIGH, N.C. - With over 30 years of military service under her belt and numerous awards and decorations; family, friends, and colleagues proudly watched as Master Sgt. Elsa Gaver was promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major here, Nov. 6, 2015.

With her compassionate demeanor during her speech, Sgt. Maj. Gaver said to her fellow soldiers, “Never give up, persevere, and stand fast to your beliefs.

Originally from New York, joined the New York National Guard in 1987 serving as a Material Storage and Handling Specialist. In 1990, then Spc. Gaver joined the North Carolina National Guard as a Supply Sergeant with the 139th Regional Training Institute.

Gaver was crucial in the Academy’s first Training and Doctrine Command accreditations and in the overall function and efficiency of the Academy. Remembered as a “behind the scenes” leader, Sgt. Maj. Gaver made it a priority to make sure that everyone around her was prepared, on track, and ready to go.
Speaking specifically to fellow female Soldiers, Gaver urged them to work hard and to remember that rewards come to those who perform their work honestly and dutifully.

Her past mentees recall being “Gaverized”, an affectionate term for on the spot corrections made by Gaver. Now assigned at NCNG’s Joint Force Headquarters, in Raleigh, she continues to play an instrumental role in leading and mentoring Soldiers.

When asked if she anticipates a change in her leadership style, Gaver said, “I will continue to engage even more actively with the troops, make an impact on the unit and implement positive change wherever I can.”

Sgt. Maj. Gaver resides in Raeford, North Carolina, with her husband Sgt. (ret) Mark Gaver. They have two daughters and two granddaughters.
