MANAMA, Bahrain - Marines celebrated the 240th U.S. Marine Corps birthday at their annual Marine Corps ball, Nov. 6.
More than 700 Marines, accompanied by personnel from the U.S. Navy, Air Force, Army and embassy staff, along with friends and family gathered at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel ballroom to commemorate the Corps’ birthday.
The event kicked off with a video from the U.S. Marine Corps’ 37th Commandant, Gen. Robert B. Nellerand Sgt. Maj. Ronald L. Green highlighting the history of their service, esprit de corps and "The Legacy Within."
After the invocation, national anthem and parading of the colors, the traditional cake-cutting took place with Maj. Gen. Carl E. Mundy III, commander, Task Force 51 cutting slices of the cake for the guest of honor, oldest and youngest Marines.
“This celebration gives us the opportunity wherever we may be in the world to come together to celebrate with our friends and family,” said Mundy.
Mundy introduced guest speaker William V. Roebuck, U.S. ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain and presented him with a gift as a token of appreciation.
“I want to congratulate all of those who have served in the Corps in the past and those who are serving today,” said Roebuck. “You all bear the proudest of titles, the U.S. Marine.”
The cutting of the Marine Corps birthday cake is an annual renewal of each Marine’s commitment to the Corps and their commitment to the nation’s quest for peace and freedom worldwide.
