Story by Staff Sgt. Jamal Sutter

    1st Combat Camera Squadron

SHALIMAR, Fla. - Former Airman 1st Class Bertie Beavers grew up in the Houston area and went to high school in Pasadena, Texas. Falling in love with the allure of wearing a military uniform and idolizing her aunt who served in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, she joined the Air Force after high school.

Beavers had a different perspective than a majority of trainees during her time because she said she enjoyed basic training. She loved wearing her uniform and didn’t mind marching, since she participated in marching bands throughout school.

Beavers’ first assignment after technical training was Langley Air Force Base, Va., where she performed duties as a teletype operator. She tracked and managed the transmission of information from one communication system to the next as deemed by her superior officers and battle situations.

Beavers separated from the Air Force after she married.

Beavers said her time in the Air Force helped her be a better military spouse because she had an understanding of his day-to-day life. She’s proud and thankful for the lessons learned, the people she met and her memories. Beavers currently resides at the Bob Hope Air Force Enlisted Village in Shalimar, Fla.

The Air Force Enlisted Village is a nonprofit organization whose core mission is to provide a safe, secure home for surviving spouses of retired enlisted U.S. Airmen.
