    1st Theater Sustainment Command

FORT BRAGG, N.C. – Soldiers with the 18th Financial Management Support Center, 1st Sustainment Command (Theater) conducted pre-deployment training at various locations on Fort Bragg from Oct. 19 to Friday.

Led by U.S. Army Financial Management Command Operational Support Team and 175th Financial Management Support Center, the first week of the exercise consisted of hands-on practical exercises to prepare the respective sections for what they may experience while deployed in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility.

The training mirrored the current mission requirements supported by deployed members of 175th FMSC who will be replaced by the 18th FMSC later this year.

“The validation exercise prepared the 18th by showing all of the sections what they are trained on and which areas could use a little extra work prior to deployment,” said Maj. Carl Moses, policy officer with the 18th FMSC. “It also helped our younger Soldiers gain confidence in their war-time mission which will help during the deployment.”

During week two, the Soldiers moved into the validation exercise phase by going and were tested using various scenarios to evaluate their knowledge and understanding of the materials covered during week one.

Soldiers were challenged as they worked together to learn new skills in accounting functions, internal controls, plans and policies and automations.

“The end goal for this exercise was for them to see where they are and where they are lacking,” said Staff Sgt. Sarah Lord, senior financial management trainer with U.S. Army Financial Management Command Operational Support Team. “If they can identify issues they have now, they can work to resolve them for a smooth deployment.”

Spc. Kenya Huguley, commercial vendor services technician, said the exercise was a welcomed change of pace because she was able to retain more information with the hands-on training.

“You have to pay attention to detail,” said Huguley. “One wrong number, letter or anything could throw off the entire payment.”

While deployed, the 18th will assume responsibility as the theater FMSC and provide technical oversight to subordinate financial management support units.
