SEQUIM, Wash. -- Navy Band Northwest (NBNW) and Sequim City Band performed a joint-band concert for more than 300 Sequim residents at the Sequim High School auditorium, Nov. 1.

The free concert was held as part of the Sequim City Band’s public concert series and is the first time Navy Band Northwest has performed in tandem with the community musical group.

“We are thrilled they have been able to make time in their busy schedules to join us for the concert today,” said Bill Benedict, Clallam County Sheriff and retired U.S. Navy commander, who served as master of ceremonies for the concert.

With the approach of Veteran’s Day, Benedict said he particularly looked forward to hearing Navy Band Northwest as he reminisced about his days as a naval flight officer.

“In this particular case, we actually contacted Navy Band Northwest and asked if they could play with us,” said Vicky Blakesley, a member of the Sequim City Band board of directors and band member of six seasons. “This is the first time playing with the Navy band and it’s quite exciting.”

“We have about three or four of their members that are joining us for our portion of the concert, because we have some spots that need to be filled, and they have some spots to be filled, so we have four or five of our members playing also with them. It’s really exciting,” said an enthusiastic Blakesley.

The Sequim City Band, a nonprofit organization, was established in 1992 and is comprised of more than 70 volunteers residing throughout the Olympic Peninsula.

“It is good to come and be a part of the music scene here in the Northwest,” said Chief Musician Evan Vis from Hull, Iowa and euphoniumist with NBNW. “The best part is sharing music and not just with Navy people, but with people of the community. It’s wonderful to get out and share the music with everybody.”

According to Lt. Bruce Mansfield, director of NBNW, the band has performed more than 400 concerts in the calendar year 2015 and is responsible for supporting 12 states, territories and provinces within the Pacific Northwest states and Canada.

Navy Band Northwest is one of nine official U.S. Navy bands located throughout the continental United States, Hawaii, Japan and Italy. The approximate 35-member band provides ceremonial and community relations services to enhance Navy presence and support Navy recruiting goals and objectives through musical support.
