MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. - The Air Force Culture and Language Center announces the availability of a new mobile app, “Culture Guides.”

Android and iOS users can now access the AFCLC’s entire collection of culture guides directly from their devices, and store those they need for later use.

Since 2009, the AFCLC has produced hardcopy culture guides on a variety of countries; each guide offers a snapshot of a country, its geography, and its people, using the Air Force’s 12 Domains of Culture as a framework. Historically, AFCLC has made paper copies available to any U.S. military element that requested them; more recently, they became available via the center’s public website in PDF format.

Now, this free, publicly-available app brings the culture guides directly to the mobile devices, allowing users to store the guides locally for use in areas with little or no wireless data coverage.

In addition to providing expanded accessibility, the mobile application allows for features that aren’t available from the hard copy guides, said Ms. Mary Newbern, the AFCLC’s lead for Expeditionary Programs.

“With the mobile app, users can access interactive maps of an area, along with information on nearby points of interest. They can also get the latest news about a country or topic and save their own photos or notes into the app,” Newbern said. “Also, our subject matter experts can easily update the app’s content, providing users with the most current information about a country.”

Most importantly, she said, the app is backed by a system that allows for quick and easy content updates, meaning app users will always have the most up-to-date information AFCLC can provide.

To get started, visit the iOS app store or the Google Play store, search for “culture guides,” and look for the Air Force wings.
