HUNTER ARMY AIRFIELD, Ga. –Squires Sports Complex was center stage for Hunter Army Airfield’s flag football championship game where two longstanding rivals, the Talons of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade and the Warriors of 2nd Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment Oct. 29.

Morale, Welfare and Recreation organized the games along with providing trophies for the championship. The winner will square off against the champions of the Fort Stewart flag football tournament.

Warriors jumped on the field early to warm up and run a few last minute drills, but not without their leaders such as 1st Lt. Alec Velasco, Company E, 2nd Bn. 3rd Avn. Regt.

“I really like our chances, we have played these guys a lot,” Velasco said before the game. “These two teams are familiar and they are rivals, but they are also friendly rivals.”

The Talons gained possession of the ball first and marched it right down the field to score taking the lead 7-0. That did not hold the Warriors back as they too scored tying the game 7-7 at half time. An all too familiar case here as these teams are usually tied at the half.

After the half, the Warriors scored on the opening drive then immediately turned an intercepted ball into another touchdown taking the lead by 14 points. The Talons could not hang on to the runaway train as they failed a fourth down conversion, giving the ball back to the Warriors.

The Warriors did what they know best and ended their drive with another touchdown. The Talons later answered back with a touchdown and two point conversion, but it was too late as the Warriors already dominated the game with a final score of 34-15.
Capt. Anthony Joyce, commander, Company E, 2nd Bn. 3rd Avn. Regt, stood with his men enjoying the progression they have made over the last year.

“As a company commander it has a direct impact on my unit’s morale and their ability to perform their soldier tasks as well,” Joyce said. “Building a sports team builds unit cohesion, it translates into their morale in their personal life, but also into their work life, into their physical fitness, and mental resilience.”
“We are definitely excited to have HHC join us on Marne Week when the two teams combine and I think we will have a good shot at the championship,” Joyce said. “Next week when we play for the division championship here on Tuesday, we are going to give our best to bring home the trophy to Hunter.”

First Sgt. Ricardo Lopez, first sergeant, 2nd Bn. 3rd Avn. Regt., was ecstatic about his team who claimed their second championship in just this month alone.
“It was an excellent game and we showed them today that we were prepared for them,” Lopez said. “We will combine the two teams and we should have a very powerful team, HHC always gives a good fight.”
