BUSAN, South Korea - Military Sealift Command Office (MSCO) Korea participated in Global Gathering’s ribbon-cutting opening ceremony here as a representative of the U.S. Navy and Military Sealift Command, Oct. 17.

MSCO KOREA commanding officer Cmdr. Eric J. St. Peter, along with other international and industry representatives, marked the opening of Global Gathering Festival, which is Busan’s largest multicultural festival.

An estimated 30,000 citizens, foreign residents and tourists attended the event, which was represented by more than 90 organizations from 28 nations.

During the festival, the MSCO Korea staff conducted a fundraiser to raise money for the annual holiday party at the Miewon orphanage here. The staff sold American-style food to share American culture to the Korean public.

“I really appreciated the cooperation and big help from my staff of volunteers for the Miewon orphanage's Christmas. The money we raised today will be donated for [orphanage] vehicle fuel and some presents like shoes and sweaters for kids,” said St. Peter. “We continue our close partnership with Meiwon Orphanage for more than 60 years.”

MSCO members volunteered under the Providers of Good Will Association (POGWA) to cook and sell iconic American food such as hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, and offered nine kinds of refreshments that were hard to find in Korean market. The MSCO KOREA and POGWA booth sold out two hours earlier than the official finish time.

“We wouldn’t have been able to execute the event without everyone’s combined effort, and the entire MSCO Korea team seemed to have a lot of fun,” said Marine Trans Assistant and president of POWGA, Pong-Sop Yun, MSCO Korea. “It was a great opportunity to improve our cooperation. I think we can raise more money for Miewon next year.”
