ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. - Members from Coast Guard Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina, adopted a new mascot Thursday, Oct. 29, 2015, after their former mascot passed away in May.

The new mascot, a German shepherd named Chief Bert, served as an explosives detection dog with a Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security Team in Galveston, Texas, before he retired in May 2015. The owner was no longer able to care for him, and the station offered to adopt Chief Bert as the station’s new mascot.

Members from the station traveled nearly eight hours from Elizabeth City to Washington, Pennsylvania, to take ownership of Chief Bert.

Mako Danforth Seastar served as the station’s previous mascot in 2007 until he passed away in May 2015.
