JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. - On Oct. 22 and 23, key leaders across the I Corps footprint gathered together to attend the Senior Leader Training and Development Conference held at American Lakes Conference Center on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.

Senior leaders from JBLM, Japan, Alaska, Hawaii, and all of the Army National Guard and Reserve units aligned within I Corps were among those in attendance to the two-day conference.

The purpose of the SLTDC is to allow for senior leaders to come together and address topics concerning training and unit readiness.

“Training and unit readiness is one of the key aspects of making sure our Army is ready and prepared to answer the nations call,” said Mr. Mike Fuller, I Corps Director of Mission Support. “With the fiscal challenges that have come with the Budget Control Act and many of the other challenges the country faces, figuring out how to train more innovatively and how to make sure our units remain ready is always a topic worthy of discussion.”

Throughout the course of the conference, different leaders from all echelons and backgrounds addressed the group as way to share best practices and bring issues that need to be addressed to the table.

“It was an opportunity to bring commanders across multiple units and platforms a chance to discuss their training guidance, how I Corps is taking that guidance, and how that guidance is issued,” said Maj. Chip Rankin, operations officer, 34th Infantry Division, United States Minnesota Army National Guard. “When you put this number of leaders in the room together it helps solve some problems and to identify friction points.”

During the SLDTC, the senior leadership from all of the different formations discussed challenges, shared best practices, and developed common operating guidelines, allowing leaders to get a better understanding of where the Army, more specifically I Corps, is at and where it's headed.

“I would think the most important thing that we could all walk away with is a clear picture of what’s going on at the I Corps, and by I Corps, I mean everybody who's associated with I Corps -- either assigned, aligned or attached,” said Fuller. “So then we can get everything synchronized and all of our resources in place to participate in key events over the next four years.”

Improved training standards and unit readiness were the key elements discussed during the conference, but some of the leaders would argue what was the most valuable tool gained throughout the two days.

“I think it's the personal relationships you get here,” said Rankin. “It’s not just an organization or name on an email, its meeting point of contacts, knowing the guy to your left or right, and putting a face to a name.”
