ENNIS, Texas – Muleskinner Squadron’s “high-speed” Stryker systems maintainer, Staff Sgt. Zach Gadwaw, was invited to race his souped-up truck in the National Hot Rod Diesel Association World Championships here on October 2-3.
The NHRDA World Championships consisted of a quarter mile drag race and burnout competition. During multiple heats over the weekend, Gadwaw attained a 12.9 second quarter mile.
In the end, his racing abilities allowed him to finish 18th out of 58 competitors from all over the world. The professional stock winner finished with a top time of 9.1 seconds for the quarter mile.
“This is my third time going to the world championships,” said Gadwaw. “The only one I have missed since I’ve been here was last year due to our deployment in Afghanistan.”
Gadwaw has been in the 3d Cavalry Regiment for three-and-a-half years. He said his skills as a Stryker mechanic have really helped him with his racing.
“It’s just basic vehicle maintenance, but more in depth,” he said. “I don’t pull the camshafts out of Strykers. My truck actually has the same transmission as a five ton MTV [motorized terrain vehicle.]”
Gadwaw had to compete in several different racing events and place high enough to get invited to the world championship. His hometown track is the Little River Race Track outside of Temple, Texas. It was here that he found his truck could do 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds.
“The first thing I ever built was a racing lawn mower when I was about 10,” he said. “It just kind of evolved from there.”
