    20th CBRNE Command

ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. - Brig. Gen. William E. King IV, Col. Mark Faria and Command Sgt. Maj. Harold Dunn made a visit to the Spring Valley Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) in Washington, D.C., Oct. 7, 2015.

The Spring Valley FUDS consists of approximately 661 acres in the northwest section of Washington. During the World War I-era, the site was known as the American University Experiment Station (AUES), and was used by the U.S. government for research and testing of chemical agents, equipment and munitions. The Spring Valley FUDS project has been ongoing since 1993 when World War-I era chemical munitions were discovered during housing construction and development.

The 20th CBRNE Command, consisting of civilians from CARA's Re-mediation Response Section-East (RRE), Remediation Response Section-West (RRW), and Soldiers from 22nd Chemical Battalion are supporting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, who has the lead responsibility for investigation and cleanup actions at Glenbrook Road. Other members of the team include Edgewood Chemical Biological Center and Parsons, the remedial action contractor.

The multi-agency team just recently passed its Headquarters Department of the Army (HQDA) Pre-operational survey in mid-September and commenced high-probability excavations at the Glenbrook Road site on Sept. 23. The expected duration of the cleanup will take approximately 18 months to two years to complete.

CARA is responsible for the Personnel Decontamination Station (PDS), emergency PDS, rescue team, weather plotting station, packaging, transport, escort and storage of suspected CWM. CARA as well as Soldiers from 48th Chemical Brigade are also supporting remediation projects at other formerly used defense sites across the nation such as Withlacoochee, Florida; Deseret, Utah; and at Red-stone Arsenal, Alabama.
