BREMERTON, Wash. — Naval Hospital Bremerton (NHB) hosted its 7th annual dodgeball tournament, in support of the Combined Federal Campaign, at Naval Base Kitsap – Bremerton’s Concourse West Fitness Center, Oct. 10.

The tournament was open to the general public with base access and attracted more than 50 Sailors and Department of Defense personnel from NHB, USS Nimitz (CVN 68), USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74), Navy Region Northwest (NRNW) Fire and Emergency Services, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility.

“Hosting at this venue provides another opportunity for NHB to reach out and impact the military community,” said Lt. Matthew Ozanich, a San Antonio native serving at NHB who organized the tournament. “We hold it every year, helping raise awareness of the CFC and promote Navy fitness.”

The tournament was organized for five-player teams to compete in a dual tournament format.

“This was a great opportunity to have some fun with Sailors in my command,” said Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Jacques Holloway, a Seattle native serving at NHB.

NRNW’s team had a strong showing playing to the last game against a team comprised of Sailors from Nimitz and Stennis. The tournament ended with a catch by Lt. Brendan Good, a Talent, Oregon, native serving aboard Stennis.

“We all had a great time, especially against that formidable firefighter’s team,” said Good. “The CFC is a worthwhile cause and it’s a great effort put forth by NHB to organize this event promoting the campaign.”

President John F. Kennedy signed Executive Order 10927 creating the CFC March 18, 1961, which estimated itself to include roughly 25,000 charities through 209 campaigns regions in the U.S. and overseas in 2010.

According to their website, the campaign is driven by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, which works in several broad categories to recruit, retain and honor a world-class workforce for the American people.

The CFC’s mission is to promote and support philanthropy through a program that is employee focused, cost-efficient, and effective in providing all federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for all.
