WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group (NAVELSG) supply department wrapped up its biennial Supply Management Inspection (SMI) Oct. 9, setting the standard for expeditionary reserve component forces.

A team of inspectors from Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC) arrived Oct. 5 to conduct the SMI, assessing NAVELSG’s supply department’s capability to support its active and reserve regiments and battalions.

Scoring approximately 95 percent over all categories included in the inspection, NAVELSG’s supply department proved they are fully capable and mission ready.

According to NAVELSG’s Supply Department personnel, the SMI undergoes a thorough inspection every 24 months in order to make sure they meet Navy standards in all areas of responsibility.

“Under the proposed NECC Supply Manual, we assisted one year and assessed the next,” said Cmdr. Donna Johnson, NAVELSG director of logistics. “This method allows us to maintain healthy processes.”

The inspection evaluates the command's readiness, which is determined by evaluating NAVELSG’s stock control, hazardous material inventory and control, and supply storage division.

“It’s very important for the inspectors to be thorough while reviewing our programs,” said Logistics Specialist 1st Class Norma Porter, NAVELSG warehouse leading petty officer. “They are our QA, keeping us and our programs honest.”

Preparations for SMI have been underway for the past year when NECC inspectors first conducted their pre-inspections. Since April, NAVELSG’s supply department has been preparing daily for this week’s final SMI inspection.

“Understanding the requirements is key,” said Johnson. “If we stick to just knowing them, we may miss something.”

SMI inspectors require four days to complete and noted NAVELSG’s readiness and dedication to being prepared.

“NAVELSG has an outstanding program,” said Cmdr. Rick Otlowski, NECC supply readiness and policy officer. “Their hard work shows how much they care.”

NAVELSG is homeported in Williamsburg, Virginia, with an active battalion located at Cheatham Annex; with forward-deployed detachments and reserve battalions located across the United States. NAVELSG provides Sailors with the knowledge and skills needed to support the fleet's surface and air-handling mission. More than 100 Sailors and civilians work hand-in-hand with the fleet and are dedicated to ensuring training is current and well-executed on behalf of 2,800 active duty and reserve Sailors in the administration, logistics and training of their active and reserve components.
