    U.S. Army Recruiting Battalion-Albany

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Albany Recruiting Battalion rotated recruiters from its six companies in New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont to man their exhibit at the nation’s only six-state fair from Sept. 18 to Oct. 4.

Recruiters worked in shifts at the Eastern States Exposition, known as The Big E in West Springfield, Massachusetts, both day and night until 10 p.m. Each recruiter maximized all potential opportunity to speak with everyone interested in obtaining information about the myriad U.S. Army opportunities.

On hand at the Albany Recruiting Battalion exhibit, the Army Adventure Trailer from Fort Knox, Kentucky offered an arcade-like challenge with laser games, a pushup platform and pull up bar to attract the 1.345 million total visitors
Sgt. 1st Class Jerry Delva, based at the Schenectady, New York Recruiting Center said that the duty at The Big E was enjoyable, adding that “this gives the entire battalion rotating duty here so we can split up the long hours. The Big E draws from all over, so everything will even itself out.”

The recruiters worked long hours until 10 p.m. The long hours provided more opportunities and more people to meet and to talk with about Army opportunities.

From the southern region of Albany Recruiting Battalion territory, Sgt. Jeremy Salazr is a recruiter with the Peekskill, New York recruiting center.

“The trailer they brought from Fort Knox really attracts the younger crowd. The pushup platform and the pullup bar is very popular with the younger crowd and gets them talking about what the physical demands are for the Army,” Salazar said.

Largely due to proximity, Springfield Company spearheaded The Big E. efforts to allocate marketing and promotional items from battalion and 1st Sgt. Timothy Hardin said that things went rather smoothly.

“The amount of students we came in contact with gave us opportunities with that younger market that otherwise wouldn’t have been able to meet. We were encouraged by the numbers of students from Connecticut who visited the recruiting exhibit at The Big E,” said 1st Sgt. Hardin.
