VICENZA, Italy – Scissors, while seemingly a normal item found in an office, sometimes serve a much higher purpose than cutting or trimming paper. Enlarged, gold in color and typically handled by more than one person, this particular pair of scissors represents a grand opening.

Lt. Col. Joseph Greenlee, commander of 405th Army Field Support Battalion-Africa based in Livorno, Italy, hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony Oct. 2, marking the grand opening of the forward-based Logistics Support Team-Africa at Caserma Ederle.

The LST-A consists of eight personnel dedicated to providing logistical support to U.S. Army Africa's missions on the continent of Africa.

The 405th AFSB currently has a team working in conjunction with the 173rd Airborne Brigade, but Greenlee said having a forward operating team working with USARAF will further improve readiness of forces operating in Africa.

"It is amazing to have the opportunity to do great new things for the Army," said Greenlee, who took command June 27, 2014.

Referring to the most recent "great new thing," Greenlee said the battalion had recently gone through a redesignation from AFSB-Italy to AFSB-Africa.

"This shows our commitment in Africa," said Greenlee, adding their efforts coincide with USARAF's African Horizons campaign to promote a safe, stable and secure Africa.

Greenlee, joined by Maj. Gen. Darryl A. Williams, U.S. Army Africa commanding general, Maj. Gen. Kevin O'Connell, commanding general of Army Sustainment Command, used ceremonial scissors to cut a red ribbon, concluding the ceremony.
