OKINAWA, Japan -- Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 3 held their first Women’s Professional Development Group meeting at Camp Shields, Sept. 23.

The meeting was held for females within the battalion to promote networking, training and professional development for women. It also allows them an opportunity to talk about professional growth and provides an open floor to discuss general issues and concerns.

“The military can be an intimidating place especially for our junior troops that are transitioning to a deployment setting with a high op-tempo very little separation from work,” said Ensign Elizabeth Paul, a facilitator for NMCB-3's Women's Professional Development Group. “We provide direct information from Navy regulations to ensure that we are aware of the policies that pertain specifically to women.”

According to Chief Legalman Beth A. Holmes, conducting these meetings is for the junior personnel to understand where to go and who to talk to about their concerns.

“Everyone faces challenges - with this group, through networking and training, we can discuss those challenges and find solutions to them,” said Holmes. “This event will benefit the troops by providing them tools and resources to be successful.”

It is not a requirement that all females attend, the meeting is simply offering a safe place to find help, advice, or voice an opinion that may benefit others. Through inclusion the Seabees can create a group of individuals that is less susceptible to the stresses of military life or deployment.

The group plans to conduct more meetings during their deployment in hopes to help female members of NMCB 3 remain efficient and complete any task at hand.
NMCB 3 is homeported in Port Hueneme, Calif., and is currently deployed to Okinawa, Japan. Its mission is to support Navy and joint forces throughout the U.S. Pacific Command with construction projects and humanitarian missions in more than 13 different geographical locations.
