U.S. Marines with Black Sea Rotational Force teamed up with U.S. Army Soldiers, Romanian service members, and local volunteers to clean up Mamaia Resort, Romania, Sept. 26, 2015.
The community event was held in support of Our Ocean, a conference committed to strengthening the protection and conservation of the sea.
Last year, participants with the Our Ocean Conference announced new partnerships and initiatives valued at over $1.8 billion, as well as commitments to the protection of more than 3 million square kilometers of the ocean.
Our Ocean takes part in protecting ocean areas, promoting sustainable fisheries, reducing marine pollution, preventing and monitoring ocean acidification, and building capacity, as well as supporting coastal communities and mapping and understanding the ocean.
“It’s important to keep the ocean clean because it sustains life on earth,” said Gunnery Sgt. Scott Boylan, an Engineer Platoon Sergeant with Black Sea Rotational Force. “The ocean supports the entire globe. Any participation that we can give will go a long way for both the ocean life and for our lives.”
This is the second year that BSRF Marines have supported International Costal Cleanup, which hit its 30th anniversary this year.
“It really is a great program,” said Patrichi. “We have the support of the U.S. embassy and we have the Black Sea Rotational Force, which dedicated [its] time to be here. We’re very proud of this program we’ve organized today.”
