JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. - Three Thunderbolt Soldiers with the 17th Field Artillery Brigade placed first in their age categories for the third annual Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Salmon Run.
Second Lt. Emily Bye, Human Resource Officer, 308th Brigade Support Battalion, participated in the Salmon Run to run with her friend and support the MWR. She didn’t expect to win first place for her age category.
“I like to run and I wanted to support everyone who participated in the Salmon Run. The run was fun, and I enjoyed running near McChord airfield for the first time. I am more excited about the upcoming Zombie Apocalypse Race in Oct.,” she said, with a big smile.
The MWR Salmon Run included a 5-kilometer or 12k for each age categories at the Holiday Park nearby McChord Airfield. After the run, Soldiers attended the Salmon Bake for their celebration.
Maj. Leah M. Kenfield, logistics officer, 17th Field Artillery Brigade, attended the event to represent the Thunderbolt team and managed to come in first place for her age category.
“I participated in the Salmon Run to use it as a tune up race for the Seattle Marathon that I will be running in November, and I participated in the Salmon Run to represent 17th FA Bde,” said Kenfield.
Kenfield enjoyed the camaraderie and atmosphere during the event. She ran into colleagues she knew from the past, Thunderbolt Soldiers, and her fellow Red, White and Blue (RWB) team members.
“The JBLM MWR Runs are small and personal to help me train for marathons. I liked the fact that after the run, MWR had a Salmon bake and the food was great,” Kenfield said. With a big smile on her face she added, “If anyone wants to train for a marathon, they can come to me. I would be glad to help.”
The unit also congratulated Capt. Ghee Ahn, support operation officer, 308th BSB on her first place 5K win during the Salmon Run.
