MOSUL, Iraq — Iraqi citizens treated coalition force Soldiers to cool drinks and sweets in the Mosul neighborhood of al-Habda. The residents, observing the Islamic celebration of Mawlid were practicing the tradition of charity as part of the day's activities.
The Islamic celebration of Mawlid is held in recognition of the Prophet Muhammad's birthday. Sunni Muslims practiced the holiday on March 20th, while Shi'a Muslims will recognize the holiday on the March 25th.
"Muslims all over the world are celebrating. They cook food and offer it to friends, or exchange chocolates," said Ibrahim Shahd, a practicing Muslim and interpreter for coalition forces. "We do this to share our joy at receiving God's messenger. In the mosques, there will be singing and poetry recited, telling the story of Muhammad and the holy Koran."
"It was really neat, kids were giving me candy, instead of me giving it to them," said 1st Lt. Jeremy Glossen, a platoon leader for Iron Hawk Troop, 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment. "It was nice to see the kids out on all the streets and smiling, obviously proud of to take part in the day's celebration."
