FORT HUNTER LIGGETT, Calif. - Seabees assigned to U.S. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 4, based in Port Hueneme, Calif., completed training on developing a functional water well in Fort Hunter Liggett, Calif., Aug. 28, 2015.

Water well training is one of the pre-deployment requirements for the battalion to complete as part of their ready for deployment certification. During the course, 20 Seabees from NMCB 4's water well team trained on the T2W well drill rig, drilling more than 555 feet into the earth’s surface to access the aquifer and begin pumping water.

"We need to train on our current capabilities we have in the Naval Construction Force to be able to provide clean and natural water resources," said Chief Construction Mechanic Anthony Moreno. "We drill using special bits and steel weighing up to 1,000 pounds, twenty-four hours a day until we hit water.”

The task required 11 days of around-the-clock efforts, with Seabees working in three teams, operating the well rig in temperatures up to 110 degrees at midday and as low as 50 degrees in the early morning.

"Everyone has to know what they are doing and it drastically impacts the flow of work on the site," said Equipment Operator 3rd Class Mitchell Daily. "You have people checking the mud stations, making fuel and water runs, hoisting steel, drilling steel and constantly doing on-site analysis. Working as a team and trusting one another is very important."

The pumped water for the well is used in various ways to include drinking, bathing, dust abatement and construction. According to Construction Mechanic 1st Class Brendan Gielow, the unit's ability to drill and maintain water wells is a vital asset for their upcoming deployment.

"Sometimes we take water for granted in the United States, but in other countries around the world, water is life" said Gielow. "Bringing clean water to people in remote areas of the world greatly improves their quality of life.”
