AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy -- Having mom and pop visit your work center can be a proud moment for any individual, but regardless of how close you are with your guest, specific measures must be followed when anyone tries to gain access to the base.

Military members can accessing make base easier by making preparations prior to their guest's arrival.

"Before bringing friends or family members to the base, there are a couple things to do to ensure access authorization," said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Porsche Davis, 31st Security Forces Squadron Visitor Control Center NCO in charge.

The VCC is in charge of coordinating and granting access to all base visitors. The type of pass needed depends on whether or not the guest has a U.S. Passport.

"The type of installation entry pass issued determines how far in advance you need to request it," said Davis. "You should ensure you know which type of pass you need at least three to four weeks prior to your guest's arrival."

The VCC issues two types of passes: a three day pass or an extended pass.

    Three day passes
    - No documents are required prior to arriving on base.
    - Authorized common access card holders may bring guests who have a valid U.S. Passport to the VCC.
    - The VCC will issue an escorted Air Force Form 75 pass for up to three days.

    Extended passes
    - This process must be used for non U.S. Passport holders or for U.S. Passport holders requesting entry to Aviano, greater than three days.
    - A completed Entry Authorization List memorandum must be hand carried to the VCC up to a month before a guest's arrival.
    - The memorandum must be approved and signed by the requestor's unit commander and include an attached a photo copy of the visitor's passport.

"Processing [an extended pass] can take two to four weeks to complete," said Davis. "Entry Authorization List memorandums must be approved by the Carabinieri, the 31st SFS commander, and/or the Italian air force Force Protection commander."

Planning and properly completing the required documents in a timely manner ensures visitors are granted the access they need.

For more information, email 31sfs.s3og@us.af.mil or call 632-4114. The VCC or Bldg. 14650 is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is closed on U.S. holidays.
