IHLA DO GOVERNADOR, Brazil—Senior leaders from eight different nations throughout the Western Hemisphere took part in the final planning conference in preparation for UNITAS AMPHIBIOUS 2015, from Sept. 8-11, 2015.

From Nov. 14-25, United States Marines along with service members from Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Canada, and Paraguay, will participate in the 9th iteration of UNITAS, which is being held in Brazil.

UNITAS is a United States Southern Command sponsored exercise and is planned by Marine Corps Forces, South. In past years, MARFORRES has supported the exercise with Marines from across North America.

This year, Marines from 23rd Marine Regiment, 4th Civil Affairs Group, Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 764 will be some of the supporting units involved in the execution of the exercise.

Held annually, UNITAS is designed to improve working relationships between the countries to deal with a wide array of challenges.

“This exercise is a great opportunity to bring partner nations together from the Americas to increase our interoperability and to share best practices in the areas of amphibious operations, stability operations, and Humanitarian Assistance/Disaster Relief,” stated Col. Michael T. Cuccio, chief of staff, MARFORSOUTH.

Given the fact any of the participating nations could be called upon to support stability operations and Humanitarian Assistance/Disaster Relief, there are many highlights to the training schedule. Some of the more notable are the ship-to-land movement portion of the exercise, military operations in urban terrain, non-combatant evacuations, civil military operations, medical treatment and evacuation, and live-fire ranges.

“We want to maintain our strong bonds with our partners across the Western Hemisphere. Together, we will be able to find solutions to some of our common problems,” stated Cuccio.
