MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. — The Wildcats made quite a splash at the Morehead City Pier during the Carteret County Chamber of Commerce John C. Beitz Service Person of the Quarter luncheon.
The Chamber recognized Staff Sgt. Bryan Hanlon for his accomplishments on and off duty in Morehead City. Hanlon was the Army’s recipient. Maj. Gen. Janet Cobb, commanding general of the 81st Regional Support Command was not just able to attend the Aug. 7 luncheon, she was the keynote speaker for the event.
“It was an exciting surprise to attend the luncheon and find out the Military Affairs Committee was not only honoring three outstanding service members, but specifically Bryan Hanlon — one of our own Soldiers and a valued 81st Wildcat employee,” Cobb said.
Hanlon is a Military Technician, assigned to Area Maintenance Support Activity (AMSA) 128 as a marine machinery mechanic as a civilian and serves as a watercraft engineer for the 824th Transportation Company (Heavy Watercraft). The event took place at the Morehead City Pier Army Reserve Center, where Hanlon works in both capacities.
AMSA 128 is one of 30 maintenance shops in the shops in the nine-state RSC, and one of just two that services watercraft.
The Chamber’s Military Affairs honors a service member of the Quarter from each of the military branches with a presence in the area; the Marine Corps/U.S. Navy, the Coast Guard and the Army Reserve.
Hanlon is active in his personal time with community outreach activities including food drives, and participates with his unit in several outreach and recruiting events. He has deployed five times, including three rotations in Afghanistan. Chief Engineer, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Clark Patton, said Hanlon is a great leader and has been a distinguished honor graduate in every military course he has taken, including his previous assignments in combat arms and his reclassification to watercraft engineering.
“He’s a great NCO,” Patton said. “He’s approachable, he excels at everything he does, and he conducts himself as a professional at all times. He is dedicated in both roles [civilian and military] and is a great representative of the Army Reserve.”
Hanlon says he’s honored and glad to be a part of Carteret County.
“This is where we live, this is our home. This is one of those communities that fully embraces military members assigned here, and I believe that relationship goes both ways. We need to do anything and everything we can to be part of this community and show them that we are worthy of their support.”
