FORT LEE, Va. (Sept. 10, 2015) -- The Fort Lee Provost Marshal Office was recently recognized by the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police for its efforts at Fort Lee.

The department received second place in the Virginia Law Enforcement Challenge for best in traffic safety and law enforcement in the commonwealth (military category) during a ceremony Sept. 1 in Williamsburg during the VACP’s 90th annual training conference. The Fort Eustis department earned first place.

The program concentrates on recognizing efforts to enforce laws and educate the public about occupant protection, impaired driving and speeding, said Capt. Brian Bishop, Provost Marshal Operations officer.

“We submitted an application that documented our agency’s efforts and effectiveness in these areas,” said Bishop. “The winning safety programs are those that combine officer training, public information and enforcement to reduce crashes and injuries within our respective jurisdictions.”

Among the positive outcomes listed in the submission were a 40-percent decrease of driving while impaired in 2014, a decrease in speeding violations, an increase awareness of child seat safety and a 41-percent decrease in distracted driving offenses.

Many states don’t allow military law enforcement departments to compete in their law enforcement challenge, and Bishop said the department was proud of being recognized by the state.

“This award gives credit to our law enforcement officers and the work they do to keep the community safe,” he said.

Fort Lee’s PMO has received recognition in this category previously in 2010 and 2012, but it had not submitted an award package in the last three years. Maj. Joe Tull, Provost Marshal, said he was not surprised the department placed in the competition.

“Our law enforcement officers are always working to make Fort Lee safer,” he said. “I’m glad their efforts are being recognized by outside agencies. The community should be proud of the work they do every day.”
