MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - The Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Falcons devoured the 1st Maintenance Battalion War Machines during the first game of the 2015 Camp Pendleton Football League aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, Aug. 24.

The Falcons shut out the War Machines 35-0, giving them confidence that this year could be the year they bring home the championship.

“The finals have been my Achilles heel for the last three years,” said Master Gunnery Sgt. Carlice Moffett, head coach for the Miramar Falcons. “But we have a great team this year and think that we have what it takes to go all the way.”

Despite the confidence he has in his team, Moffett knows there are things they need to work on if they want to achieve their goal.

“We may have won but the execution was a bit sloppy,” said Moffett. “We need to work on tackling drills and build our offense up a little more. I gave the players a day off, but I made it clear that when they come back they need to be ready to work so that the next game is a cleaner win.”

Moffett said he never expects a win because he knows that anything can happen while they are on the field.

“It doesn’t matter if we have a higher skill set than the other team because I’ve seen people win by sheer determination,” said Moffett. “The goal is to take their motivation and their heart during the first quarter of the game, which we did in this one, because that ways you know you’ve won.”

According to Sgt. Leo Briggs, a coach for the Miramar Falcons, a strength for the Falcons is that they had a lot of time to build relationships and skills during the off season. Falcons players began practicing four days a week since April 4.

“This year’s team has an unbreakable chemistry that they built in the beginning,” said Briggs. “These players trust that their teammates are going to give it their all, on and off, the field and that’s why the Falcons have what it takes to win it all this year.”

The next game for the Falcons is scheduled for Sept. 1 at 5 p.m. against the 7th Engineer Support Battalion Engineers aboard Camp Pendleton.
